The count starts when you type.
What the numbers mean for a web text
Words per sentence decide whether people finish. Plain prose sits around 15 to 18 words per sentence. Past 25 the reader forgets how the sentence started, and that is exactly where most stop reading.
Characters decide what Google shows. A page title is cut around 60 characters and a meta description around 155. Paste the line here to see whether it fits before you publish.
Reading time is based on 220 words per minute, roughly what an adult reads on screen. A page over four minutes needs headings that make skimming possible.
What the tool does and does not do
- Everything is counted in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server, so there is no limit on how much or how often you count.
- Sentences are counted on full stops, exclamation and question marks. Common abbreviations are not treated as sentence ends.

Common questions
- How do I count words in a text?
- Paste the text here and words, characters, sentences and paragraphs are counted in your browser. Words are runs of letters and digits, so hyphenated words count as one.
- How many words is a good web page?
- There is no fixed number, but under 150 words rarely answers a question, and Google prefers a page that answers properly. More important than the count is that the answer comes early and the sentences are short.
- How long does it take to read 1000 words?
- About four and a half minutes on screen, at 220 words per minute. The tool shows the reading time for your text.
- Are characters counted with or without spaces?
- Both are shown. Google's title and description limits count spaces, so that is the figure that matters there.
